Training current and future workers in the construction industry. NEXT GEN EQUIPMENT TRAINING is working with the Construction Education Foundation (CEF) here in Colorado to help train current and future workers in the construction industry. Our specialty is heavy equipment operator training using high-tech and cutting edge equipment simulators. Next Gen supplied training scholarships to CEF and we want to share a video that highlights one of the outstanding students that recently attended a training session with the Next Gen instructor at our training facility in Golden, CO.

Simulator Training is the Way to Go

Employee screening — since finding people who are already trained in specific pieces of equipment isn’t always possible, using the simulators as a screening technique for hiring is ideal. Testing potential employees in the simulators to see how they react, their level of coordination and to verify the skills they claim to have, but without putting actual machines or other employees at risk, is a great way to find the right staff.

Improved safety and less risk during training — each piece of equipment is monumentally expensive, to say nothing of the importance of safety for both the operator and the people working in the field with them. Leveraging simulator training is a great opportunity to experience real life situations with zero risk to projects, existing equipment and personnel.

5 Reasons to Use Simulation Training

2020-08-31T19:10:08+00:00June 19th, 2020|Construction Insights, Heavy Equipment Simulators, Heavy Equipment Training|

Simulation training is highly successful when it comes to engaging learners and teaching how to perform tasks, techniques, or processes. The ability to train multiple people in the same way, expose them to real-world situations in the safety of the virtual environment, makes simulation training an efficient and effective choice for organizations.

The costs of taking machines out of production and fuel consumption are immediate realized savings. Because simulations can measure learners’ results, other ROI can be attributed as well. Skill improvements can be shown; and progress can be tracked and tested through simulations. Consider, too, the cost of a mishap, unplanned machine maintenance, or medical bills? Any costs to invest in simulation training can be realized in a better bottom line.

Teaching the Basics

So, here we go again you might say. As contractors, we are all searching for the best workers we can find, but for many that list appears to be shrinking. We often find that the one significant behavior that must change among all of our leaders and experienced supervisors is that we all must be more engaged in training and educating the new workforce.

This reality is sometimes tiresome for many seasoned veterans, but what are we left to do to move past this situation if we do not commit to training. As one Foreman told us, “I know I’m going to have to train the new guys, but it gets old real fast!” Translation? “This really stinks!”

Why Heavy Equipment Simulation? Eliminate Risks…

Simulation allows learners to practice dangerous scenarios that would otherwise be impossible to duplicate in real life. Making a mistake in the virtual world doesn't have the same consequences as real life. Simulations can replicate perilous or risky situations, allowing learners to train and master procedures, so once in the real world they are better prepared for the situation. The risk to hurting themselves, co-workers, job sites or machines are greatly reduced because of knowledge gained during simulations. What would happen if the brakes failed on a haul truck; a loaded bucket was carried too high; or a machine went [...]

Prevent damage or injury when loading bulky materials into a truck…

When loading bulky materials into a truck, what should you do to stabilize them to prevent damage to the equipment a potential injury to the truck operator? Start by placing a bucket load of loose material in the bed of the truck. Then place the large bulky material on top of the loose material. Then put another bucket load of loose material on top of the bulky piece. This method not only keeps the large bulky pieces stable but it also protects the bed of the truck from being damaged when dumping the bulking pieces into it.

What is the proper way to approach a stockpile with the wheel loader?

Approach the bank squarely with the bucket slightly off the ground and just skimming the surface. The loader frame should be straight when the bucket enters the pile. This straight configuration gives the loader optimum stability, the best traction, and the greatest transfer of horsepower available to do the task.
